A.B.B.A is a bench top tool for bleeding hydraulic brakes on bicycles. Hydraulic brakes need to be bled routinely to maintain high performance. Bleeding brakes is a notoriously tedious process, that’s where A.B.B.A. comes in. This tool automates the fluid flushing process, so you can leave syringes, specialized fittings, frustrations, and the mess behind. With the addition of this tool in one’s arsenal, they would be able to simply hook up the machine and press go and within minutes have a brake that is bled with no cavitation.
For this project the team created a prototype that will bleed a brake with a push of a button. A.B.B.A.’s key components are a pair of peristaltic pumps, one for mineral fluid and one for DOT fluid. The two major types of hydraulic brake fluids. Both are known for being messy and DOT is particularly known for being corrosive. The system is designed to isolate the two fluids, keeping them separate and well contained. An Arduino Uno is the brains behind the operation running code written by the team. A pair of float switched are mounted in the reservoirs to avoid running the tank dry and introducing air to the system.
